What Size Trolling Motor For A 14 Ft Boat? (Plus Tips For Maximizing Its Use)

boat fishing and trolling on calm lake

Whether you’re a new owner of a fishing boat, or you’re simply wanting to replace your trolling motor, you want to make sure you put the right motor on your boat.

There’s a lot of factors that go into deciding what size trolling motor to use, such as the weight of the boat, how many people will be inside the boat and what kind of distance and power you require out of your trolling motor battery.

What Size Trolling Motor To Put on A 14 Ft Boat

The best piece of advice I can give you is to buy the most powerful trolling motor that you can afford. You can never have too much power when it comes to having a trolling motor for your boat.

With that said, a 55lb thrust trolling motor, like the Minn Kota Endura C2 55 is the trolling motor that I would recommend for a 14 foot boat. Trolling motors with less thrust will work, but if you plan on adding any other people on the boat, or plan on loading it down with much gear at all, you’ll find that less powerful trolling motors just won’t provide the performance you need.

Tips For Maximizing Trolling Motor Performance

Here’s a few tips for you to make the most out of your trolling motor so it can put in the miles you want out of it.

Buy An Extra Battery

When you finally decide to buy your trolling motor, you should plan on also buying a second battery. Having an extra battery on board is going to save you a lot of hassle later on down the road.

To get the most out of this second battery, wire it in parallel with your other battery. Doing this is going to extend your range capability significantly.

Buy A Quality Battery Charger

A quality battery charger that’s dependable is going to keep your trolling motor batteries topped off and ready to go.

Buy Extra Shear Pins

You never know when you might need an extra shear pin, or two. I’ve been caught out on the water more than once when I was in need of an extra shear pin.

You know what they say, if you’re prepared, it’ll never happen. So grab an extra shear pin or two that way you’re always prepared.

Always Carry Oars

Again, carrying an extra set of oars is going to just make you more prepared. Being prepared and having an alternative mode of transportation will be welcomed when a shear pin breaks or your battery suddenly dies.

Final Thoughts

The best size trolling motor for your 14 foot boat is going to be the most powerful trolling motor you can afford. I recommend the Minn Kota Endura C2 55, or any other comparable sized trolling motor. I recommend you buy an extra battery, shear pins and lastly, an oar or a paddle.
